(Note: The following HAS NOT taken place and is NOT RUMORED anywhere. It is simply a creation in my own mind that makes too much sense not too happen.)
Tony Gonzalez has been traded to the Dallas Cowboys for a 4th round pick. The Falcons are done, the Cowboys can win big NOW and Gonzalez desperately wants a ring in his final season.
Why it makes sense for Dallas:
The Cowboys won’t have a better opportunity to win the East and make a legit playoff run in the NFC. Having Dez, Witten, Gonzalez, Terrance Williams and maybe Miles gives you a shot to score with anyone in the conference.
Monte Kiffin’s D
It sucks. They’ve given up 81 points and over a thousand yards in the last two weeks. It looks like we (GUILTY) overrated their personnel and there’s no immediate reason to believe they’ll improve anytime soon. The best way to make up for that problem? SCORE BIG.
Let Romo keep the keys
I have to admit, I didn’t think Tony was capable of that Bronco performance. He was magical, epic, captivating and nearly perfect (I know, a Romo microcosm). Point is, if you aren’t going to turn this thing over to him RIGHT NOW, then you should just rip up his extension. This has to be his show, for better or worse. Even though he cost his team vs Denver, he earned the right to throw the Cowboys in or out of the playoffs the rest of the way. He would have immediate trust in a vet like Gonzalez and the Cowboys red-zone problems would instantly disappear.
The 2 tight end offense
The Cowboys fell in love with this concept in the offseason. They drafted Gavin Escobar in the 2nd round to make the transition. Problem is, Escobar still needs time and James Hanna has apparently been deported. Why not bring in one of the greats of all-time (still playing at a HOF level) and give defenses an “old-skool” Gronk-Hernandez combination that could still torch any D. Imagine Witten and Gonzalez spelling each other, giving Tony Romo TWO fresh safety valves to rely on in crunch-time.
The other weapons
I know Terrance Williams just had a career game. I know Cole Beasley has started to fulfill the expectations of a poor-mans Wes Welker, but can you trust these two yet for a playoff run? I can’t, already made that early season mistake with George Selvie. Yes, Miles Austin returned to practice Wednesday, but do you…..well, I don’t even have to finish the sentence.
The competition.
Jerry needs to erase all this talk of just “getting in the tournament.” Enough of that BS- Now is the time to go and TAKE IT. The division is atrocious and NO ONE can defend the pass (including the Cowboys)
Here are the pass defense rankings in the East:
- Philly- 30
- Giants- 25
- Redskins- 17
The only reason Washington is this high is because they’ve played one less game (bye week). Before that, they started the season as the worst statistical defense in HISTORY throughout the first three weeks.
Why it makes sense for Atlanta:
1. Their season is now finished with a 1-4 record. Julio Jones is not only gone for the year, but Roddy White and Steven Jackson are both hurt.
2. Tony Gonzalez deserves better than this. The Falcons BEGGED him to delay retirement after last year. He didn’t return for money, he came back to win a ring. Gonzalez has to be living in a world of regret over his decision and the Falcons owe him a chance to complete his dream.
3. Compensation. You’re telling me Atlanta wouldn’t accept a 4th round pick for half a season? Sounds like a great deal and not too much for Dallas to give up for a title run.
4. Arthur Blank. By all accounts, the Falcons owner is a good guy. He does the right thing. Keeping Gonzalez trapped on a sinking ship in his final season wouldn’t be the right thing. ONE PROBLEM- Coach Mike Smith just commented on the possibility of trading #88: “That’s preposterous that Tony would be traded. He’s an integral part of our offense and has been since he’s been here. And he’s having another Hall of Fame season.”
Nice speech Mike, but you’re about to be done too. The trade deadline is October 29 at 3pm, plenty of time for Gonzalez to quietly approach ownership and ask for a trade to end things the right way.
So there it is. Tony Gonzalez to the Cowboys for a 4th round pick. Tell me why it doesn’t work? The Cowboys acquire a hall of fame weapon, giving Romo three LETHAL targets to overcome Monte Kiffin’s defense. Dallas doesn’t overpay, Atlanta gets a draft pick for a half-season rental and Jerry makes a splash.
THE. TIME. IS. NOW.
Stop screwing around with just “getting in the tournament.” Become a Super Bowl threat. Give every D coordinator throughout the league nightmares. Become the “old-skool” Patriots.
Go get another 88!
